Everything You Need to Know About Smoothie Bowls

Six months ago I stumbled upon smoothie bowls and was instantly intrigued, especially since I hadn’t ever thought of eating a smoothie with a spoon before. The first time I tried a smoothie bowl I was instantly hooked, call me a smoothie bowl junkie.

What is a Smoothie Bowl?

A smoothie bowl starts with a thick blend of whole foods, such as frozen fruits, veggies and other healthful mix-ins (e.g. avocado, oats or yogurt).

Compared to the smoothies you’re used to sipping with a straw, the base of a smoothie bowl has a slightly thicker, almost ice-cream like consistency.

How do you make a Smoothie Bowl?

There are quite a few different ways to make a smoothie bowl. The only appliance you’ll need is a blender to make them.

Simply add your frozen fruit to a blender and blend on low until it looks like Dip ‘n’ Dots. Then add a little (not too much!) non-dairy milk of choice – I like almond – you can even add protein powder if you’d like.

Blend some more on low, scraping down the sides until you have SOFT SERVE! Yes, a smoothie bowl is glorified soft serve and it’s so dang delicious. Hence the reason I can’t stop.

Once your smoothie base is in your bowl, now comes the fun part, toppings! You can add so many different ones such as coconut, granola, chia seeds, etc.

    I love smoothie bowls as well. I love creating one with an açaí base and adding strawberries and shredded coconut to the top. My kids actually love them too.

    I’m pretty sure I could live off smoothie bowls, to be honest. I love them so much! They’re delicious AND filling. The best of both worlds!

    I’m definitely a fan of smoothie bowls. They fill you up and you can have such a variety of them without being bored.

    Well, I don’t think my smoothie bowls will ever look as incredible as the ones pictured above BUT I do love making them! SO yummy for a healthy breakfast.

    I recently had to get my wisdom teeth out and smoothie bowls were basically all I ate! Now I’m addicted. This is a great rundown! I will have to try those recipes you included at the end!

    I have never tried a smoothie bowl because I never know how to make them. They look so yummy and healthy especially if you crave for something sweet! I will have to check out the recipes to learn how to make one!

    Those are such beautiful smoothie bowls! I love making these when I want a ‘treat’ for breakfast but I will try out these recipes so I can match the beauty of these examples.
